CC recognized for student voter participation
Centralia College has been awarded a Silver Seal for its efforts to increase nonpartisan student voter participation in the 2022 midterm election.
The Silver Seal was awarded to campuses that achieved nonpartisan student voter participation of 30-39 percent. In 2022, 32.4 percent of eligible, registered CC students voted in the midterm election. That is slightly higher – 1.8 percent – than the average of all campuses participating in the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge.
“This award honors the college’s student governments over multiple years,” said Shelley Bannish, director of Student Life. “Students have held several voter registration events every year. It’s been an ongoing effort. In June, three students and I attended the Civic Learning and Democratic Engagement Meeting in Detroit. We came away with a lot of ideas and strategies to incorporate civic engagement throughout the campus. We are excited about what the students plan to do throughout the year.”
The Silver Seal designation is a result of Centralia College’s participation in the national ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge. CC was one of 29 Washington colleges competing. Nationally, more than 1,060 colleges and universities and more than 10 million students participated.
