Fiscal services director honored as a national rising star
Nikki Sprague honored for her service to the college and students.
Nikki Sprague, executive director of fiscal and business services at Centralia College,
received the 2026 Rising Star Award from the National Association of College and University Business
Officers on July 20 in Anaheim, Calif. The award is in recognition of her high potential to
succeed as an executive and business officer in higher education.
Sprague is only the second recipient in award history to represent a two-year community college. She is the first-ever winner from Washington.
“Nikki Sprague’s dedication, talent, and willingness to go above and beyond have made a real difference to the college’s day-to-day operations,” said Dr. Bob Mohrbacher, Centralia College president. “She brings both energy and excellence to her work and I look forward to seeing all that she accomplishes next.”
During her time at the college, Sprague has led efforts to modernize and streamline the college’s business operations, replacing outdated paper-based processes with more efficient systems that improve payroll, student payment processes, and overall administrative effectiveness.
Sprague began at Centralia College as a student. After working as a caregiver for many years, Sprague came back to school and became a first-generation college graduate at age 46. She was earning her bachelor’s degree at Centralia College when she began working as a student intern in the fiscal services office. She was hired on full-time and rose through the ranks to become executive director of fiscal and business services.
“That journey taught me that opportunity doesn't always arrive on a traditional timeline. Sometimes all it takes is someone willing to give you a chance, a mentor willing to guide you, and the courage to believe it's not too late to start something new,” she said. “That's why I care so deeply about higher education and the work we do. Every day, we help create opportunities for students whose paths may not be traditional, but whose potential is limitless. I am grateful to be part of a profession that helps change lives, because I know firsthand just how transformative that can be.”

This award may have my name on it, but it reflects the dedication, talent, and collaboration of so many people who have helped me along the way.”
