Career Spotlight: Phlebotomy
Phlebotomy is the practice of drawing blood from patients and taking the blood specimens to the laboratory for testing.
As a career, phlebotomy is flexible, in-demand, and able to relocate almost anywhere.
Phlebotomists work primarily in hospital and clinic settings, and may work day or
night, full-time or part-time depending on the position.
“The students love being a part of the patient’s care team,” said Tara Boerner, healthcare instructor. “The blood is what helps the care team diagnose and treat patients. Students enjoy being part of that team.”
In Washington, phlebotomists earn an average wage of $19.60 per hour and an annual wage of $42,530, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Centralia College offers two options if you’re seeking a career in phlebotomy.
Phlebotomy
At Centralia College, you will be taught to perform clinical laboratory tests with a focus on hands-on practice and dexterity. This is a 43-credit program that, for most full-time students, can be completed in three quarters.
You can start taking classes at any time. Phlebotomy classes are offered at CC in January. If you successfully complete all the courses, you will earn a Certificate of Proficiency in phlebotomy.
Phlebotomy for Healthcare Workers
If you already have a healthcare license and are working as a medical assistant, registered nurse, or nursing assistant, the phlebotomy certificate from CC is a quick program to get you an extra level of certification.
The Phlebotomy for Healthcare Workers Certificate of Completion is just two classes for a total of 13 credits.
