Career Spotlight: Nursing Assistant (CNA)

Commonly referred to as CNAs, Nursing Assistants work under the direction of nurses and assist in the care of patients in hospitals, homes, adult family homes, assisted living, and skilled care facilities.

Nursing AssistantsBeing a nursing assistant is an entry-level position and a great stepping stone to other healthcare positions. For example, certification as a nursing assistant is required to start training to be a registered nurse.

“It’s very common for someone to start the nursing assistant program and realize pretty quickly that they love college, they love the work, and they want to do more in healthcare,” said Lorri Speer, healthcare programs instructor. “It’s amazing to see students light up when they discover this field is for them – and they love it.”

Nursing assistants typically provide the day-to-day care for patients, such as bathing, feeding, checking vital signs, documenting information, reporting changes in condition to the nurse, and keeping patients safe.

Nursing assistants are in dire need locally and nationwide in a variety of healthcare settings. In Washington, nursing assistants earn an average of $17.29 per hour or $36,310 per year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

“Students get hired immediately out of the program,” said Speer. “Locally, there’s such a demand that students are working right away. Our program has a great reputation, so employers know they’re going to get a great nursing assistant, one with a solid work either and healthcare fundamentals.”

The nursing assistant program takes approximately one college quarter - 8 weeks – to complete. Classes are offered both day and afternoon. A new series starts in January.

Upon successful completion of the Nursing Assistant Certified training program, you are eligible to take the National Nursing Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP) exam to become licensed in Washington State. In addition, you will earn an American Heart Association Healthcare Provider Card, Nursing Assistant Registered, and a certificate of completion for nursing assistant training.
