Merce Cunningham (1919-2009)

Mercier Philip “Merce” Cunningham was an American dancer and choreographer who was at the forefront of American modern dance for more than 50 years. He was born and raised in Centralia. In 1939, Cunningham moved to New York and danced as a soloist for six years before becoming a teacher at Black Mountain College, an experimental arts college. While on tenure at Black Mountain, Merce formed the Merce Cunningham Dance Company. Over his career, he choreographed more than 200 dances and 800 site-specific works.
