Sollars lettered in baseball and basketball at Centralia College and made the Academic Honor Roll. From 1976-1983 he was head coach of women's basketball at Wenatchee Valley Community College leading them to three NWAACC championships in 1979-1981. By the time he left WVCC his record was 151-25.From there he went to Portland State University and coached there for three years. In 1986 he took the job at Portland University coaching more than 900 games and too his Pilots to the NCAA tournament four consecutive times, 1994-1997. Sollars, was named NWAACC Coach of the Year three times and was a five-time West Coast Conference Coach of the Year. He retired with a 38-year career collegiate record of 565-512. Jim was inducted into the NWAACC Hall of Fame in 1994 and the WVCC Hall of Fame in 2008.
