Ruby was an instructor of health and physical education for 29 years, and also coached women's field hockey, basketball, and tennis from 1965-1972. In 1969, her tennis team won the State Championship. She was one of the first women commissioners in NWAACC and dedicated herself to bringing women's athletics to new levels of recognition and respect.

She became mayor of Napavine, where she lived, in 1984 and held that office until her death in 1995.
