Which degree is right for you? There are several issues you should consider when choosing between these degree paths.

First, what is your level of math preparation as you start your degree? The AS, track 1 degree requires at least Calculus II, plus an additional quarter of either Calculus or Statistics. The AB degree requires Calculus I. If your math skills are weak, it may require more than two years to complete the math requirements of the AS degree, especially if you are starting at the pre-college level.

How much math is required for your bachelor's degree? for your post-graduate degrees? Few (none??) of the bacculaureate institutions in Washington require three quarters of Calculus; others require two quarters of calculus or one quarter of Calculus and one quarter of Statistics or other combinations. You should check the requirements of several transfer targets to learn their minimum Math requirements. In general, additional Math classes above the minimum will count toward your degree in biology. If you are interested in applying to UW Medical School, they require either 3 quarters of Physics or 2 quarters of Physics and 2 quarters of Calculus. In some graduate programs (Ph.D., M.S.) additional Math preparation, especially Calculus or Statistics, is a plus.

How strong are your communication skills? The AS, track 1 degree requires half as many credits in Communications and Humanities / Social Sciences as the AB degree. If your English skills are strong or if your career goal expects that you will frequently communicate via the written and spoken word, the AB degree may be a better fit. Even if you decide to pursue an AS degree, you should consider ENGL 102, SPEE, or PSYC courses as electives.
