Medical Billing Clerk
Certificate of Proficiency

Purpose

The Medical Billing Clerk Certificate program includes classes in Business English, math, and human relations with specific classes in medical coding and billing. Classes in biology, anatomy and medical law and ethics will help prepare students to work in a hospital or medical clinic.

Students who successfully complete this program should be able to: use medical terms correctly; apply rules of grammar, punctuation, and spelling; demonstrate the ability to relate well to others in an office environment; demonstrate an understanding of human biology and anatomy; demonstrate the ability to accurately code medical procedures and diagnoses; demonstrate an understanding of medical law and ethics; demonstrate and understanding of the common types of medical insurance; demonstrate an understanding of computerized medical billing systems.

Employment Options: As the population ages, the need for office staff with medical billing and coding knowledge will increase. Potential employers for graduates of this program are medical, dental, and chiropractic offices, convalescent centers, billing services, hospitals, and clinics. Additional advancement opportunities are available through completion of applicable Associate degrees and professional certifications such as Certified Medical Coder, Certified Medical Insurance Specialist; and Certified Medical Office Manager.
