Legal Office Assistant

Purpose

The Legal Office Assistant Certificate program is designed to prepare students for entry-level employment in a legal setting. After successful completion of the program students should be able to perform duties assigned to legal receptionists and transcriptionists. Prerequisites include: demonstrated proficiency in math, reading, English, and basic keyboarding skills.

Students who successfully complete this program should be able to: recognize and accurately use a wide variety of legal terminology; accurately prepare basic legal documents from rough draft or transcription; have a basic understanding of the filing, phone, accounting, and scheduling skills necessary for employment in a law office; compose business letters, reports, and memos; process documents using a variety of word processing and spreadsheet programs; calculate numerical data using a 10-key calculator; demonstrate human relations skills and professional behavior necessary for successful job performance.

Career opportunities: Positions currently can be found in city, county, and state government. Some graduates find openings in private law practices. Others take jobs in state agencies that have law-related fields. Law enforcement and real estate are also possible employment areas.
