Associate in Technical Arts
Purpose
Degree program with a major in marketing/management provides training in business and supervisory skills for persons interested in competing for employment in marketing occupations. The program provides a broad business background that allows entry into a range of business occupations such as entry-level management and sales. It also provides "team" training for writing market research projects; developing and presenting speeches; applying economic concepts to the business; demonstrating understanding of sound marketing theory for business, i.e., define target markets, using demographics; demonstrating proficiency in accounting principles; demonstrating proficiency as a supervisor; demonstrating the ability to plan, organize, lead and control a project or a department on a work site.Career Opportunities: Vast career opportunities with a faster than average growth expected in these sectors of our society (SIGI)
Employment Options: Owning your own business. Professional/manufacturer's sales representatives, managing not-for-profit organizations, social work technicians/assistants. Retail sales leading to management position in book, furniture, hardware, sporting goods, apparel and accessories, food and general marketing. Automobile parts clerk, customer service representatives, management and supervision position.
Students who successfully complete this program should be able to:
Start and manage their own business; write clearly and concisely while composing business letters and memos as needed in a business, operate a computer as a word processor, use the internet for doing research, use PowerPoint to make business presentations; use a day timer effectively to keep their appointments; demonstrate their proficiencies and accomplishments in a professional portfolio; function effectively on self-directed work teams, plan, organize and conduct business meetings; demonstrate good human relations skills; Demonstrate professionalism in their mannerisms, their appearance and their personal hygiene; demonstrate proficiency in business math skills, prospect for customers, prepare and deliver professional sales presentations; develop, implement and present orally and in writing market research projects; develop and present professional speeches; apply economic concepts to the business they work in; demonstrate their understanding of sound marketing theory to their business; demonstrate proficiency in retail concepts; develop and present sales promotion and advertising campaigns for business; demonstrate proficiency in accounting principles; demonstrate proficiency as a supervisor; demonstrate the ability to plan, organize, lead and control a project or a department on a work site.
Although the ATA degree is not intended as a transfer degree, some articulation agreements are in place. Please see your advisor about transfer opportunities.
